Pilates
What is it?
The Pilates Method is system of physical conditioning developed that aims to create balance in the body through exercises that are supported by breath, awareness and attention. The approach is slow, controlled and methodical. Deep abdominal, joint mobility and spinal articulation are emphasized. Students are encouraged to perform the exercises in a precise, fluid and consciously coordinated manner with out excess muscular tension. Through this learning process the student is educated about efficient movement patterning that allows for greater ease, flexibility, strength and coordination.
Who is it for?
It is suitable for all ages and abilities, ranging from people recovering from injury to cross training for high performance athletes. It’s slow controlled and methodical approach conditions and strengthens the body’s muscles without impact on the joints.
Joseph Pilates
The Pilates Method was developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). The desire to improve his own health and strengthen his body led to his interest in physical fitness. Having a background as a boxer and a gymnast, he developed a system of movements that worked both the mind and body. He developed an extensive repertoire of exercises using the many pieces of equipment he invented. This is a highly recognized physical and mental conditioning system that people continue to benefit from to this day.
